Idea for future snow coping

by andy on Jan.08, 2010, under Blog

Here’s a couple of ideas/gripes I’ve mulled over during these mild wintry conditions. Some probably a little silly, others maybe not.

    • Got ice outside your house? Clear it yourself! Its not tricky, just get a spade to break it and shovel it.
    • The community spirit that once bonded the country has gone, think about it, help your neighbours out. Its not as if you haven’t got the time seeing as you can’t go to work.
    • There was a time when the kids would relish earning a little bit of extra pocket money by clearing the odd driveway for people.
    • What if we brought back horse and carts? The horses could walk on the snow and ice fine and the hoofs would crack the ice making it easier to move.
    • To spread the cost of machinery, we could do a Snow Equipment Share scheme with a southern hemisphere country. Ship the stuff back and forth in Spring and Autumn.
    • Snow chains for cars perhaps, or a hard rubberised version so the roads to get cut up when drivers can’t be bothered to take the chains off when they reach a cleared road.

Whatever we do in the future. Apparently the country just has to grind to a halt and panic because its a little difficult and cold outside.
We may be an island, but you’d think we would have learned to stand on our own feet by now. Instead we seem to have gone backwards in coping with things and absolutely must rely on other people. Its like we’ve become a “Can’t someone else do it?” culture.

[I realise this has become more gripe then I originally intended]
